Concussion in Community Sport

Concussion in Sport Education

Gain an understanding of the invisible injury, how to recognise the signs and symptoms, removing the injured athlete from the match/activity, referral options and return to play/activity.

Community Concussion Education is important for everyone, from players, coaches and volunteers, to students, teachers, parents and much more!

Supporting the Community

Backed by funding from the Office of Recreation, Sport and Racing, SASMA has developed a Concussion in Sport Education Program that equips clubs and the wider community with the most up-to-date knowledge and practical information for recognising and managing concussion in community sport.

Concussion is one of the most talked-about injuries in sport, yet many people still lack the confidence to recognise and respond appropriately when it occurs.

Whether you’re involved in community sport, school sport or high-performance environments, understanding concussion helps create safer sporting experiences and ensures participants receive the right support at the right time.

Our education programs provide practical knowledge that can be applied immediately on the sideline, in the classroom or within your sporting organisation.

Concussion education is relevant to anyone involved in sport and physical activity.

This program is ideal for:

  • Coaches
  • Sports Trainers
  • Teachers
  • Parents and caregivers
  • Players and athletes
  • Umpires and officials
  • Club committees and administrators
  • School sport coordinators
  • Sporting organisations and leagues

No medical background is required.

Our practical workshops provide participants with the confidence to recognise and respond to concussion in real sporting situations.

Topics include:

  • Recognising the signs and symptoms of concussion
  • Identifying concussion red flags
  • Removing an athlete from play safely
  • Referral pathways and medical assessment
  • Recovery and return-to-sport principles
  • Supporting athletes, parents and families
  • Current best-practice concussion management

Participants leave with practical knowledge that can be applied immediately within their sporting environment.

We understand that every club, school and sporting organisation is different.

Programs can be delivered through:

  • Face-to-face workshops
  • School-based education sessions
  • Club and league presentations
  • Regional and metropolitan delivery
  • Professional development events
  • Online learning opportunities
  • Tailored education programs

We’ll work with you to find a delivery option that suits your audience and schedule.

Concussion management continues to evolve as new research emerges. SASMA’s concussion education is built on current evidence and best-practice sports medicine principles, ensuring participants receive accurate, up-to-date and practical information.

Our programs are informed by:

  • Current concussion research

What sets SASMA’s concussion education apart is the involvement of the SASMA Concussion Steering Committee. Testimonials

Thanks for organising an excellent presentation on Concussion and Dr Michael Makdissi, who presented an excellent session on the new guidelines. Great effort for all the sports trainers who took the time to attend and especially those who travelled from regional South Australia.

Excellent night, very informative and the panel was a very good mix. Well done I took heaps of notes and this will assist us to modify our concussion policy.

The course gave me a better understanding on recognising concussion as well as the long term affects if not managed correctly.

Keep doing what you are doing!! You are an invaluable source of information for us, nights like Wednesday night sparks the interest and passion of us trainers to protect our players at all costs and gives us the tools to confidently do our jobs! … Thank you for such a well run and informative night. You chose your panel well and they were very well spoken and easy to understand.

A concussion occurs through a collision with another person or object where biomechanical forces to the head, or anywhere on the body transmit an impulsive force to the head/brain. In most cases, this results in transient neurological impairment. It should be noted that concussion can also occur with relatively minor ‘knocks’. (www.concussioninsport.gov.au)
