PROMOTIONAL / HOW TO FLYER

University of South Australia was commissioned by the South Australian Sports Medicine Association with grant support from The Office for Recreation Sports & Racing to explore the development of an injury surveillance database and tool using mobile technology, which can be used by sports trainers and managers, coaches, general public to report occurrences of sports, exercise or recreational physical activity injuries. The aim of this database was to facilitate an ‘evidence-based’ understanding of the prevalence of sports and recreational physical activity injuries across South Australia.

Sports and recreational activities provide significant health benefits and serve as one of the most common sources of physical activity in the community. The injury surveillance database has significant potential value to help design, promote and apply evidence based public health action to reduce the societal burden of injuries in sports and physical activities.

To assist in developing programs to reduce the risks associated with physical activity data needs to be collected on the prevalence of injuries, how serious the injury problem is, the associated risk factors and where prevention measures are most urgently needed.  This will assist in developing programs to reduce the risks associated with physical activity and for effective public health prevention strategies. Communities need better information, in particular, about the numbers and types of injuries that occur and about the circumstances in which those injuries occur.

It is SASMA's aim to inform sports trainers and the community about the online injury form and its important use that in time will provide rich data to support injury prevention and a safe sporting environment. Injury surveillance is an important part of risk management related to sports and physical activity and can be used to underpin public health polices as a population-level strategy for injury prevention across South Australia.
