For Recreation, Sport and Active Participation Settings
(Autism and ADHD inclusive)
Who this guide is for;
This guide supports coaches, instructors, officials, volunteers, administrators and club leaders to use respectful, inclusive language when working with autistic participants, participants with ADHD, and other neurodivergent people.
Why language matters in sport and recreation
Language shapes expectations, confidence, participation and belonging. In sport and recreation settings, inclusive language helps:
- Create welcoming environments
- Reduce stigma and exclusion
- Support participation, confidence and enjoyment
- Build trust with participants and families
Language preferences are individual, and best practice is always to ask and respect each person’s preference.
